Florida had a population of 17,466,621 in 2004, of whom 3,479,264 lacked health insurance for the entire calendar year.  This represents 19.9% of Florida's population.
In addition, Florida ranked number 49 out of the 50 states & DC in terms of its percent uninsured.  In the population, 62.2%
had private insurance such as employer provided health insurance, retiree health coverage, Medigap, and direct purchases such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
11.4% of the population received Medicaid through the state, while 17.8% and 5.3% received Medicare and Champus/Tricare coverage, respectively.
Florida ranked 45, 32, 2, and 15 in private coverage, Medicaid, Medicare, and Champus across the states.
In terms of the uninsured, Florida excelled in the following areas relative to other states for the following occupational groups, industries, and firm sizes:

On the other hand, Florida lagged in insurance coverage for the following occupational groups, industries, and firm sizes:
Wholesale and Retail Trade, Under 10 employees , Service occupations, Sales and related occupations, Professional and related occupations,
Professional and business services, Office and administrative support occupations, Management, business, and financial occupations, Educational and health services, 25-99 employees,
1000+ employees, 100-499 employees, 10-24 employees.
On the other hand, Florida lagged in insurance coverage for the following socioeconomic groups:
White only, Under 15, Some college but no degree, Never married, Married,
Male, High school graduate - high school diploma or equivalent, High school dropout, Female, Divorced,
Bachelor's degree or higher, 65 plus, 55 to 64 years, 45 to 54 years, 35 to 44 years,
25 to 34 years, 15 to 24 years, $80,000 to $89,999, $60,000 to $69,999, $50,000 to $59,999,
$40,000 to $49,999, $30,000 to $39,999, $100,000 and over, $10,000 to $19,999.
